Weekly Reflection 8
This week we covered Exploring Inclusion in BC Education and we also took a look at the K-12 Evaluated Resource Collection. Focused Education has evaluated print and digital learning resources, to support teachers with decision making. One of the resources that stood out to me was the picture book āI Am Not a Numberā By J.K. Dupis and K. Kacer. It was interesting to learn about the book and the content it covers about Ireneās time in residential school. This tool benefits teachers by helping them in their decision making and can be beneficial for the students in efforts to make them feel more included in the classroom environment. I enjoyed our padlet activity where we got into groups and reviewed our practicum school districts inclusion policies and procedures and got to discuss with them! It was really interesting to see what each district had set in place and how that can benefit the students who attend the schools. For example, SD62 has support for new immigrants and transfer students to help them transfer over to the new school they are attending; the website has a list of phone numbers, emails, and other contacts for the families to use. To learn more about the services that SD62 has to offer, check out this link, https://www.sd62.bc.ca/programs-services/inclusive-education/services. Overall, I think this class helped me realize that there are more supports out there then I knew of, and I am happy we got to learn about them so that if a parent or guardian of one of my students in the future needs help I know what information I can give them and where I can help direct them towards.
Here is what the SD62 website looks like too:
